In search of the best quality communal woolled sheep

Farmers from Matatiele (Maluti A & Maluti B), Mount Fletcher and Maclear came in large numbers to attend the NWGA’s 4th Regional Flock Competition, held at Castle Rock shearing shed in Mount Fletcher last week.

The National Wool Growers Association (NWGA) will hold a second competition to accommodate all the members. 

A total number of 271 entries were received, with the ram category bringing in the highest number. 

From the 50 entries received in the Ewe Lamb category, the following winners were selected:

Winner, runner up and 3rd place VMB Shearing Shed Mount Fletcher

4th place Maluti B (Mr Duba) Matatiele 

From the 13 entries from the Young Rams category, 

Winner – Bethania (Mr Nkethu)

Runner up – Utloanang Project 

3rd place – Diphokong (Mr Lephafa) Mount Fletcher 

4th place – Mr Sabelo 

From the 50 entries received in the 2-tooth Ewes category, the following winners were selected:

Winner & 3rd place – Kuebung SS (Dominique Tsoananyana) Mount Fletcher 

Runner up – Masakala SS (Mr Kambi) Maluti A 

4th place – VMB Association 

5th place – Mr Nkethu, Mount Fletcher 

From the 73 entries received in the 4-8 tooth Ewes, category, the following winners were selected:

Winner & 2nd place – Mr Ramolibeli 

3rd place – Sifumene SS (Mr Bhungane) Maluti A 

4th place – Nkwenkwezi SS (Mr Petuha) Maluti B 

5th place – Ulundi SS (Mr Ngubo) Mount Fletcher 

The highest number of 85 entries was in the Ram category. This category was quite difficult to judge, as the standard of the rams have improved so much over the past years. 

Winner – Luzie SS (Mr Silolo) 

Runner up – Mr Nkethu 

3rd place – Utloanang project 

4th place – Mr Ramolibeli 

5th place – Magadla SS (Mr Ndandile) Maluti A 

Good luck to all the winners, who will take part in the Inter Regional Flock Competition, to be held on 20 July 2023 in Tarkastad.

Its initiatives include African Farming information days and workshops, which empower farmers – whether new or experienced – to build profitable and sustainable farming enterprises.
