The recent Savanna Goats Production Auction in Polokwane was a historic event for Mathuba Genetics’ Emmanuel Mudau, who became the first black breeder to sell at a Selected Star Savanna Sale at Vleissentraal and sold his goats to international online bidders.
With Craig le Roux of Vleissentraal facilitating the auction and SwiftVee running the online bidding platform, Mudau sold five maiden ewes between six and eight months old for an average of R6 000.
The other sellers in the third edition of the Selected Star Savanna Sale were Ghaap Landgoed, Tat Scholtz, Steven Strydom and Anton Barnard.
“I am grateful to everyone who participated in the Selected Star Sale, especially the buyers from Zambia I do not know,” said Emmanuel. “Thank you for supporting and loving Mathuba Genetics.
“I never thought that one day the animals I breed in a small village in Limpopo would be sold to breeders in Zambia. Good genetics are crucial, and Mathuba Genetics is proud to provide high-quality genetics to Zambia.”
Emmanuel is a self-taught goat and sheep breeder in Ha-Ravele near Makhado in Venda. He began farming in 2009 with three goats he bought with his pension money after resigning from a furniture store.
From those humble beginnings, he has become a respected stud breeder of Bosvelder sheep and Savanna goats under the brand Mathuba Genetics, which he registered in 2015.
