Good management techniques, vaccination and biosecurity were emphasised by Jessica Phathela, manager of breeding of Ntaba Nyoni Cattle, which belongs to President Cyril Ramaphosa, at a symposium held by the Ankole Breeders Society at the Bona Bona Game Lodge near Wolmaransstad in North West.
Ntaba Nyoni applies good management techniques in its herd, which includes the largest group of Ankole in South Africa, Bonsmara and Boran. Phathela recommends:
- Using dedicated workers.
- Conducting pregnancy tests after each breeding period. Heifers get a second chance to get pregnant. Unproductive cows are culled.
- Minimising competition between animals. Basic handling facilities are indispensable.
- Good recordkeeping.
- Branding all animals.
- Selecting the right bull for each group of females.
- Consulting experts.
“On such a large farm, not only good management but also the consultation of experts applies, and making sure you always know what other breeders are doing,” she says.
It is important to use facilities that are suitable for the cattle. Plan for the winter so the cattle do not lose condition. A good condition score ensures a good intercalving period.
Make sure there is enough clean water and follow a good dipping programme.
For good disease management, it is also important to keep a closed herd. New arrivals are first quarantined, sick animals are turned away, the vaccination programme is updated regularly and the cattle’s health is faithfully monitored. A veterinarian is consulted when needed. Maintain good biosecurity.
Get your herd inspected and cull all the cattle that fail inspections.
