A block train pilot project saw cargoes being loaded and delivered in 10 days – a third of the normal time.
According to André van der Vyver, CEO of the South African Cereals and Oilseeds Trade Association (Sacota), this is unheard of and the process can take 30 days or more if managed by Transnet.
In March, Sacota asked Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) to reintroduce a block train for its members. A block train consists of a series of wagons carrying the same type of cargo and destined for the same location.
The key characteristic of a block train is that it moves as a complete unit from its point of origin to its final destination, without stopping or shuffling of wagons along the route. This reduces the time and complexity of the journey.
“It increases the bulk grain export volumes transported by rail and reduces wagon turnaround time,” says Van der Vyver
Another advantage of a block train is that Sacota members sponsor a security camera on the main export line that is successful in preventing cable theft.
The organisation has agreed to expand the project if TFR can increase volumes and/or efficiency. This will enable Sacota to levy a small security fee from members to fund the expansion of the security camera project.
Pilot project
The pilot project involved Sacota members presenting a composite maize order that would align with the structure of the block train and that could be loaded on a single branch line. The train was given priority on its return journey to Durban, and no other wagons were added or detached.
The pilot project was independent of TFR’s regular business. It began with empty wagons departing from Durban and being allocated for loading at Danielsrus and Reitz in the Free State.
Although there were discrepancies in the positioning of the wagons, they were loaded successfully, and the train arrived in Durban within two days.
“The success of the pilot project underscores the potential benefits it offers to Sacota members in coordinating their efforts,” says Van der Vyver.
“Sacota management will continue to engage with TFR management to determine its viability and proceed with the pilot project.”
