Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa, formerly Consol Glass, has invested R3.3 billion in the manufacturing of glass containers in South Africa since its establishment last year.
According to a statement by the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition, Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa intends to build the continent’s largest facility for the production of glass containers.
The company earmarked R1.5 billion for its Nigel plant in May last year and later added another R1.8-billion for the project.
Consol was founded in 1944 and Ardagh acquired it last year. The company makes about 5 billion glass containers annually at four production facilities in Bellville, Clayville, Nigel and Wadeville.
Paul Curnow, CEO of Ardagh, says there is strong growth in sustainable packaging in Africa due to increased income and greater sustainability awareness. “The expansions use water and energy more efficiently, thus benefiting the environment.”
The expansion projects will create about 300 direct job opportunities. The company estimates that every direct job opportunity creates five more indirectly.
