The quality of the Dormers on offer at the Hatari Dormer auction resulted in an excellent average price of R18 100 for rams.
With an outstanding average price of R18 100 for rams, a 100% sale, quality breeding material and good attendance, the Hatari Dormer auction met all the requirements for a successful auction.
A total of 30 stud rams, 40 stud ewes and 200 commercial ewes from the Dormer studs Hatari, Gras Karo and 2Broers were sold at the Be-Human centre outside Bloemfontein.
“We are very satisfied with how the auction went and also with the prices. There were many familiar faces, but also quite a few new buyers, which is a sign of how healthy the interest in the breed is,” says Marius Eksteen, who operates the Hatari stud with his brother, Jan, outside Bloemfontein.
“Everyone knows the economy is under pressure, so we are particularly impressed with how the rams performed.
“When you look at Dormer auctions this year, where the average price was R10 000, the average we achieved is excellent. Especially considering that not one ram was sold at an exorbitant price that would have skewed the average upward.”
Hatari delivered the most expensive ram of the day when HE 220062 was sold for R54 000. Lodie van Reenen and Dr Carel Scholtz from Nova Barletta Dormers near Clocolan in the Free State were the buyers.
“Lodie is selective about what he acquires. A ram must tick all the boxes and this ram achieved that,” says Eksteen. “Nova are prominent breeders in the breed, and it almost means more to me that they were the buyers than the price.”
The most expensive ewe was DZ 220283, which achieved R50 000 with her triplet lambs. The sellers were Gras Karoo Dormers, from Venterstad in the Eastern Cape. The lambs are descendants of the champion ram, Tyson, from Hatari. Johnny Forbes from Vredesig Dormers in Darling was the buyer.
“Johnny is very particular about quality, and it says a lot that he bought the ewe,” says Eksteen.
He believes Tyson’s genetics contributed to the quality of the lambs. “We bought Tyson at Gras Karoo during the Royal Show. This ram is going to leave a lasting mark on the breed.”
The auction was hosted by BKB, with Gert Jordaan as the auctioneer.
