Nearly 100 farmers recently attended the African Farming grain and livestock farmers’ day in Brits, North West, despite wet weather.
The event featured leading cattle and crop farmers who shared their top production tips, including how small changes and proper planning can have a significant impact on the bottom line. Attendees learned about livestock handling, land preparation, soil improvement and managing finances.
The day started with a presentation by General NP Nkopodi, a livestock farmer and shareholder of Andre Kock & Son livestock auctioneers, who shared his inspiring story. He emphasised the importance of production auctions as a platform to find quality livestock and meet other farmers who breed better animals. Nkopodi also encouraged farmers to be open to learning from others, including their own workers.

Lunga Njara, project manager responsible for emerging markets and special projects at Santam, discussed the importance of insurance in the farming business. He stressed that farmers need insurance to mitigate risks from multiple factors, with climate change the biggest threat.
Karabo Puswe, an agricultural specialist at FarmSol, explained the importance of soil testing or analysis. He said each year farmers, financial institutions and investors lose millions of rands because of marginal soils. He advised farmers to investigate the soil profile and fertility status of each production unit to mitigate the risk of capital loss. He stressed that healthy soils are the basis of successful crop farming.
Ringetani Matlou, an agribusiness specialist from Absa, gave tips on budgeting for each production season and warned farmers against overspending with their profits. She urged them to build strong relationships with their bankers to receive proper advice.
Leonard Thaphathi, manager of developing agriculture at NWK, advised farmers on using what they have to optimise production. Amos Njoro, a commercial grain farmer from Vanderbijlpark, shared his experiences and inspired farmers with his story.
The day was sponsored by Santam, Ford SA, John Deere, Absa and Andre Kock and Son livestock auctioneers.
