Grain SA plays a major role in the development of farmers in the grain sector. A day of celebration was recently held to honour the success stories of farmers who were helped by Grain SA and who put in the hard work.
Jeremia Mathebula, chairperson of the Farmer Development Programme at Grain SA, said the aim of Grain SA’s Day of Celebration was to showcase the talent and achievements of farmers from different categories, such as smallholder farmers, subsistence farmers, and new-era commercial farmers.
“The noticeable thing about all the farmers who participated in the event is that they are motivated and want to win. These farmers are part of Grain SA for the lessons and courses on offer. In this group a lot of knowledge is shared and because of this, and the training they receive, farmers who join Grain SA managed to increase their yields and hectares tremendously.”
African Farming spoke to a few farmers who attended the event, and the feedback was extremely positive.
Clifford Mthimkulu who received a Thousand Club certificate said it is because of Grain SA that he is able to achieve this.
“So much of what I’ve learned, I learned from Grain SA through study groups and mentorships, grain marketing, and development.”
Tlale Radebe said the day was full of learning opportunities for him.
“I especially learned from farmers from other provinces who shared which techniques they use. I enjoyed networking with them. Grain SA plays a key role in my farming business and my mentor is always just a phone call away.”
Karabo Mhlaba is quite passionate about his future as a farmer.
“Grain SA helps me through mentorship and I’m also part of their study groups. This event presents us with a lot of opportunities. As a young farmer I’m definitely coming back next year hopefully to enter the competition.”
