Despite challenging economic times and a devastating veld fire that destroyed much grazing land, the Van Zyl family of Kroon Livestock, Vryburg, had another excellent auction.
Jan van Zyl Sr says he did not know what to expect from his annual production auction on the main farm Buckshee because many recent auctions elsewhere in South Africa have not achieved good sales figures.
Nevertheless, he feels blessed by the excellent results he and his sons, Gideon and Jan Jr, achieved. An exciting aspect of the auction is that the buyers were mostly commercial farmers. There were also quite a few foreign buyers, including from Tanzania.
Kroon Livestock offered 53 Manso bulls, of which 52 were sold. The highest price was R190 000 for JVZ 20-20. The buyer was Mohamed Mulla. Manso bulls averaged R80 423.
Red Brahman bulls were sold for an average of R78 823, with the highest price being R320 000 for JVZ 20-155, sold to Wouter van Deventer. A total of 17 out of 18 bulls were sold. Manso heifers averaged R59 431, with the highest price of R130 000 paid by Jan Fouché for JVZ 21-13. All the Manso heifers changed hands.
Red Brahman heifers averaged R31 631. The highest price was R60 000 for JVZ 20-487 and the buyer was Marius Pretorius. A total of 19 out of 25 red heifers offered were sold.
