The R375 000 for a heifer at the annual National Boran Heifer Extravaganza in Parys is one of the highest prices paid for a Boran heifer and may be a South African record.
This heifer, GE 22-43 Lienkie, was sold by the Gerrit Potgieter Family Trust of East Coast Borans, East London, to Yolandie and Danie Botha of Iminathi Ranch, Mookgophong.
The average price for the heifers sold was R79 492,50, thanks to Lienkie and several other heifers that sold for more than R200 000 each.
Christopher Havenga, breed director of the Boran Society, could not confirm if R375 000 is a new South African record but he told African Farming it is definitely one of the highest prices paid for a heifer of this breed.
“I am very pleased with the auction and the prices achieved. I did not expect it. I thought we would average R35 000 to R40 000. Then it was double that. It’s because the sellers brought their very best heifers to the auction.”
Two heifers each fetched R250 000. Keith Peinke of Peinke Ranch, East London, sold PRB 22-42 for this amount to IJ van der Walt of Mosdene Cattle Ranch, Naboomspruit. Stompie Olivier of Hotspot Cattle, Ventersdorp, also received R250 000 for one of his heifers, HOT 22-101. The buyer was also Mosdene Cattle Ranch.
Other exceptional prices included R225 000 for CTP 22-118 from Cherokee Borans, Middelburg (Mpumalanga), to Hotspot Cattle; R200 000 for BMB 22-25 from Ridwaan Moola, Moola Boerdery, Amersfoort, to Iminathi Ranch; and R200 000 for GE 22-49 East Coast Rachel from the Gerrit Potgieter Family Trust to Paul de Wet, Green Valley Crops, Kestell.
The auction was conducted by Vleissentraal Frankfort. Meerkat handled the online sales and Tom Hodgson was the auctioneer.
