Transnet has finally appointed a new permanent CEO.
Michelle Phillips was appointed as the CEO of Transnet on Wednesday evening by Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Public Enterprises.
Phillips began acting in the position last October after Portia Derby, her predecessor, resigned in September.
Gordhan said Phillips has already made significant progress in improving Transnet’s performance during her short tenure as acting CEO.
“Phillips solves problems. She is a team player and works collaboratively to achieve goals. With her more than 20 years of experience at Transnet in various roles, she knows what it takes to turn the business around,” Gordhan said.
Phillips is considered a veteran at Transnet, where she has held various positions, including head of Transnet Pipelines since 2020.
The Citrus Growers Association of South Africa says Gordhan’s announcement is particularly good news. “With Phillips firmly at the helm, we are hopeful that Transnet’s turnaround strategy has merit and will be implemented. We wish Michelle all the best and will support her and Transnet.”
Gordhan confirmed that Nosipho Maphumulo is the new chief financial officer of Transnet.
