The first signs of a light winter snowfall will be visible from tomorrow in the Eastern Cape.
According to the Eastern Cape weather office, the first snow will start falling on Sunday night on high-lying areas outside Graaff-Reinet as well as on high-lying northern areas in the province.
Ayabonga Tshungwana, a weather forecaster, says temperatures will drop significantly over the weekend, with some areas experiencing minimum temperatures of -4 °C.
“Although the snowfall will not be significant, it is the first of the season,” he says.
According to the South African Weather Service, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape will experience very cold weather from Monday.
Very cold temperatures (maximums below 10 °C) with mountain snowfalls are possible over northern high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape, eastern high-lying areas of the Western Cape, southern high-lying areas of the Northern Cape, as well as parts of the Drakensberg and in Lesotho.
On Friday the South African Weather Service warned that a cut-off low-pressure system is developing, which could affect the western and southern parts of the country from Sunday to Monday.
Cold conditions have already been experienced since Friday in western and southern parts of the country and are expected to spread to central and eastern parts.
