A miniature donkey, MMC D 23/08, bred by the MMC Stud of Marina and Chris van der Merwe from Potchefstroom, outperformed the miniature horses at the fifth production auction of Gawie Naudé and his son Willem.
The jack (male donkey) fetched the highest price of R35 000. The buyer, Vincent Mulder from Randfontein, also purchased the other MMC donkey at the auction for R12 500.
According to Marina van der Merwe, the demand for miniature donkeys has increased so much after the recent Nampo Harvest Day that she had to create a waiting list. Miniature donkeys are usually sold for R15 000 to R20 000.
A miniature horse, the mare MMC Buck’s 100s & 1000s from the Van der Merwes, was sold for R28 000 to Johan Enslin from Durbanville. At the 2023 production auction, he paid R100 000 for the champion stallion MMC At Senor Hotspots from the Naudés’ Eduan Stud of Buttermead, Barkly East.
The offering of 10 miniature horse stallions sold for an average of R11 350 and the 19 mares for an average of R12 842.
The auction was held on Saturday, 25 May, at the Be Human Centre, north of Bloemfontein, by Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth, and the auctioneer was André van Zyl.
