The sellers were the Maize Valley Boerbok, Savanna, Kalahari Red and Brangus Stud in Hoopstad, owned by Andrew Roberts, and the buyer was André Marx of Marxville Brahman from Vereeniging. The ram was the two-tooth champion as well as the senior champion ram at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg.
According to Roberts, this ram can make a significant impact in the industry and will advance any Savanna herd.
A Savanna ewe from the same breeder was sold for R55 000 to Christiaan Labuschagne of Hakuna Mata Trust in Hoopstad.
A total of 255 Boer goats, Savanna goats, Meatmaster sheep and Kalahari Red goats were offered, and the total revenue was just over R2,1 million.
The Pharn Trust of Limpopo paid the highest price of R37 000 for a Boer goat stud ram from Triangle Farms. A Boer goat stud ewe from Maize Valley fetched the highest price of R40 000 and was purchased by the Hakuna Mata Trust. The HJ de Kock farm from Hertzogville paid the highest price (R26 000) for a Kalahari Red stud ram.
The highest price for a Savanna stud ram was R70 000, and for a Savanna stud ewe it was R50 000.
This is the only auction of its kind where all three meat goat breeds – Boer goats, Kalahari Reds and Savannas – are offered.
The Royal Genetics group consists of the Maize Valley Boerbok, Savanna, Kalahari Red and Brangus Stud of Andrew Roberts from Hoopstad; the Triangle Farms Boerbok and Brangus Stud of Jimmy Roberts from Hertzogville; the Karsten Boerbok and Kalahari Red Stud of Piet Karsten from Upington; the Kleinnood Savanna Stud of Louis du Plessis from Magaliesburg; and the Van den Berg Farming of Wouter van den Berg from Pretoria.
According to CR Botha, stud livestock agent from André Kock & Son Auctioneers of Vryburg, which hosted the auction, there were about 40 floor registrations and 28 online registrations.
Roberts says he is very satisfied with the auction. “It was a great success. The quality of the animals from all five breeders involved was very good. We aim to take the auction to new heights next year.”
