The 60 lots of Droughtmaster cattle sold at the recent auction in the Viljoenskroon district of the Free State generated a combined income of R4,103 million for the two host breeders and one guest seller.
Most of the animals offered were bred by Carl Crous of the Waterford Africa Droughtmaster Stud in the Viljoenskroon district and Gert Barnard of the Chan-Té-Mar Droughtmaster Stud in the Humansdorp district of the Eastern Cape.
The guest seller was Albie Stadler of Werda Droughtmasters in the Brandfort district of the Free State.
The top price of the day was R550 000 for lot 4, which was the eight-year-old and eight-month pregnant Considerata SA Covergirl (CSA 160024). She was bred by Chan-Té-Mar.
“She is one of the top three of my herd. Her mother is one of the best cows ever bred by Considerata SA. From this cow, you can build a herd,” Barnard wrote in the sale catalogue.
Lot 4 was purchased by Johan Dannhauser of the Considerata SA Droughtmaster Stud in the Parys district of the Free State.
The auction’s top-priced bull was lot 17, which sold for R170 000 to John Leonard from the Kroonstad district of the Free State. This three-year-old bull, Waterford TMasters 21-0030WBT, was bred by Waterford.
Leonard also paid R160 000 for a cow-and-calf pair (lot 13). Waterford bred the two-year-old cow, Waterford TMasters 21-0067WBT, and her bull calf.
Lot 22, also bred by Waterford, was the two-year-old and seven-month pregnant heifer Waterford TMasters 22-0001WBT, which sold for R220 000 to Boetie Viljoen from the Leeudoringstad district of the North West. This was the top-priced heifer of the day.
According to the auction’s organisers, Elrize Alberts Marketing and Meerkat Online Auctions, the day’s average prices were:
- R205 333 for three pregnant cows
- R75 333 for nine pregnant heifers
- R64 429 for 28 bulls
- R54 300 for ten cow-and-calf pairs
- R48 429 for seven commercial bulls
- R47 500 for two three-in-one combinations
- R28 000 for one cow
About the auction results, Crous commented: “I am very, very satisfied. It was a beautiful story. Everything went well and I am grateful.”
