“We are grateful that we could hold an auction and sell all the animals,” says Pierre Hart, owner of Amberdene Beefmasters, adding that the situation in the Eastern Cape cattle industry is very challenging.
The highest-priced bull at the auction (lot 4) was sold for R95 000 to Majesto Beefmasters of Theo Coetzee from Koster. This polled bull is a dark red colour, gains weight easily and is not a carrier of the myostatin gene.
Amberdene Beefmasters breeds hardy animals adapted to redwater, gallsickness and sourveld areas. The highest-priced pregnant cow was sold for R17 500.
Bulls sold at an average price of R56 722 and pregnant cows for an average of R16 650.
A total of 25 bulls and 60 pregnant cows were offered. Brendan Wicks was the auctioneer and BKB RobCaw was the broker for the auction. The sale was held at the Komga showgrounds.
