This auction, the fourth presented solely by Hanzyl, also celebrates Van Zyl’s quarter-century of cattle breeding since he began with a commercial herd in 1992.
The most expensive bull, GVZ 210117, fetched R150 000. Ockert Potgieter purchased the bull for his Letterkrans stud in Oudtshoorn. Walter Schulze from Cradock bought the second most expensive bull, GVZ 210109, for R90 000.
The 32 bulls offered achieved an average price of R60 718,75. The average price of the pregnant cows was R18 384,62, those with calves R18 529,41, pregnant heifers R17 151,61 and non-pregnant heifers R10 000.
According to Van Zyl, his bulls meet the criteria for good length, topline and sheath. Calving ease and low maintenance are some of their strong points. They are expected to breed good replacement heifers that are early maturing.
He says his breeding programme has changed over the years to produce breeding material that can improve under high-pressure conditions, increasing profit per hectare.
The turnover of the auction, presented by Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth on 24 July, was R3,288 million. SwiftVee managed the auction online and André van Zyl was the auctioneer.
