BKB hosted the auction on Saturday 3 August at Bona Bona between Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad. Jan Mostert was the auctioneer. This is the 25th time this auction has been held.
BS 21017, an ewe from Hageland Ile de France in Klerksdorp, and her triplets were sold for a new record price of R90 000 to Chiboo’s Ile de France in Randburg.
Mark Gietzmann, who co-owns Hageland Ile de France with Flip de Bruyn, says this ewe, born in 2021, has an astonishing inter-lambing period of 214 days. “She has lambed five times and produced 10 lambs. She tends to produce multiples and is very fertile, making her a highly productive ewe. Her lambs also perform well.”
He says the sale was one of the best recent sheep auctions in terms of the quality of the animals and attendance.
Hageland Ile de France also holds the record for the most expensive Ile de France ram sold at a local auction. In 2022, a ram from this stud fetched R120 000 at the Jacaranda Ile de France auction in Pretoria.
GW 230088, the ram that fetched the highest price at last weekend’s auction, is from Gert van der Linde of the Van der Linde Ile de France Stud in Mareetsane. It was sold for R37 500 to three buyers, the RCH, Harlin and Gatsak studs in Ermelo.
A total of 45 stud rams and 80 stud ewes were offered for sale at the auction, as well as 180 commercial ewes. In total, Ile de France sheep worth R2 128 500 were sold.
The average price for rams (37 sold) was R15 662, for ewes with lambs (17 sold) R22 618, for open ewes (51 sold) R9 824, and for commercial ewes (143 sold) R4 640.
Diaan Nieuwenhuis from BKB says the prices for stud animals at the auction were especially good. “The prices of the commercial ewes were also good. Some ewes achieved prices equivalent to those of heifers.”
