Top-quality animals were once again offered at the production auction hosted by Wynand du Toit of Suidplaas Dohnes. It was held on 7 August at the farm Klipbankskloof outside Protem.
Two rams were sold for the highest price of R32 000 each. The ram JG 230424 (lot 5), one of twins, was sold to Jaco and Mikayla Schoonwinkel from the farm Swartsdam near Swellendam.
Vlooi and Dirk du Toit, the father-and-son team from Potberg Dohnes, also in Swellendam, bought the second ram, JG 231151.
All the animals at the auction were sold. The average price for the rams was R13 261. The ewes were sold for an average price of R2 394.
Wynand says he is happy with the result. “The livestock industry is struggling and people are switching to crop farming. Wool prices are the same as they were in 2016.
“However, I believe the tide is turning, and the buyers got good genetics for little money. If you want to build up your herd, now is the right time.” OVK Livestock & Auctions hosted the sale and Jakkie Nel was the auctioneer.
