Doc Faffa and the veterinarian Dr Jan du Preez originally published the book in 2016. New information and extra chapters have been added and the book is being released with a fresh cover.
The printing of the book is funded by Design Biologix, a private vaccine company in Pretoria led by two women, Karen Nel, the director, and Dr Angela Buys, the CEO.
Nel says vaccination is much more important and takes less time than bringing sick animals back to health. She hopes the book will be a valuable resource for farmers and others responsible for the care of animals.
Du Preez passed away in February while he was still working on the final details of the book. Malan took over the job with the project manager and publisher, Sanet du Plessis.
Du Plessis says they decided to revise and update the book instead of simply reprinting it due to the extent of the changes made.
Doc Faffa says the book is written in easily understandable language and is available in English and Afrikaans (Entstowwe en Immunisering van Plaasdiere).
“It is very important that farmers use and administer vaccines correctly so they can function effectively,” he says. “The book covers the various diseases and vaccines for cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, poultry and rabbits, including how the diseases are transmitted and treated and the vaccines available for them. A list of Design Biologix vaccines is also included at the back of the book.”
Doc Faffa is the manager of the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa, a regular speaker at African Farming farmers’ days, gives expert advice on www.africanfarming.com, and hosts a veterinary segment on Landbouweekliks (Via, DStv channel 147).
