We’re sharing highlights of the speakers’ presentations at our recent Farmers’ Day in Ermelo.
More than 100 farmers from provinces including Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng and Free State attended the recent African Farming Farmers’ Day at the Vleissentraal Auction Centre in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.
The event lived up to the African Farming Farmers’ Day experience by providing valuable insights and advice for farmers on various topics. It illustrated how small changes to farming operations can significantly impact a farmer’s profitability.
Success Mdluli is the project manager of the Zamukele programme, a development project of Schoeman Group. The programme aims to establish emerging dry bean producers as commercial farmers. It started in 2017 and focuses on identifying and supporting small white bean farmers by providing access to mentorship, seed, fertiliser, and local and international markets.
Success shared some advice with the farmers:
– Farming on a small plot requires strategic planning and efficient management to maximise grain yields. By following key techniques and best practices, small-scale farmers can achieve impressive results and sustain their operations.
• Farmers should conduct thorough research beforehand, including specific requirements for the commodity they plan to grow, cultivar performance in their area, soil conditions, and optimal fertiliser and chemical use. Understanding the weed spectrum, diseases and pests relevant to their crop is also crucial.
• Connecting with neighbouring farmers can provide valuable insights and advice. Their experience can be a great resource for overcoming local challenges and improving farming practices.
• It’s important to know exactly where grain will be delivered. Establishing a reliable market for produce ensures a clear path for sales and reduces the risk of surplus or unsold stock.
• Becoming a member of agricultural bodies such as Agri SA and Grain SA is recommended, as these organisations provide crucial information about climate conditions, cultivars and industry developments that can impact farming practices.
• Participating in events and workshops is essential to stay updated on the latest farming techniques and innovations. Networking with other farmers and experts can offer new perspectives and solutions for farming challenges.
