The strong demand for high-quality Suffolk ewes resulted in a relatively high average price for female animals at the society’s national auction on 5 October at the Be Human Centre north of Bloemfontein.
Piet Wessels from BKB Kroonstad says all ewes were sold at an average price of R18 600. “This is due to the strong competition among bidders. The most expensive ewe achieved R45 000, and bidders tried until the end to buy her.”
The sellers, Johan and Linette Goosen from Hertzogville, were pleasantly surprised by the high price for the ewe. The new owner is Johnny Forbes from Vredesig stud farm in Darling.

Forbes, a young businessman-farmer, joined the Suffolk Sheep Breeders’ Society in 2021. This is the second time he has taken part in the national auction.
One of his rams, 375 220024 from Johen Trust, achieved the highest price of R120 000, and the buyers were the Goosens. Forbes was also the main sponsor of the national auction.
The average price of 14 rams was R31 800. Only four were not sold.
BKB presented the auction. The online platform SwiftVee was used, and the auctioneer was JP Marais.
