On Saturday 2 November the 2024 Western Cape Prestige Agri Awards were celebrated at a glittering gala event at the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate outside Paarl.
Western Cape premier, Alan Winde, said he never misses the “Oscars of agriculture”. “Everyone’s contribution and commitment to our economy is invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for everything agri-workers do to ensure our province’s food security and promote our economic growth.”
Dr Mogale Sebopetsa, head of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, said the Prestige Agri Awards are not just about individual recognition. “It is also aimed at improving the image and socio-economic conditions of agricultural workers and their families. This competition provides workers with new skills, knowledge, and opportunities for career growth, broadening their understanding of the agricultural sector and inspiring them to reach new heights.”
The competition, with a major sponsorship from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Shoprite, Agrimark and Agri-Expo, recognises the important role agricultural workers play in the economy and has seen a significant growth in participation – from 36 entries in 2002 to 1,233 this year.
The Western Cape Prestige Agri Awards was originally initiated in 2002 by the Hex Valley Table Grape Association in the Hex Valley area. The competition was established to give recognition to the valuable and important contribution of agri-workers to the sustainability and growth of agriculture in the Western Cape. The competition has grown from 36 entries in the Hex Valley in 2002 to 1 233 participants from 15 regions in 11 categories.
