Cremora, a Boran cow more than eight months pregnant, achieved the enormous price of R850 000 at Drostdy Borans’ last auction.
Christo Crafford of Drostdy Borane says the purpose of the auction was to give people one last opportunity to buy breeding material for which his father, also Christo, who recently passed away, was responsible. Christo senior was also a former president of the Boran Cattle Breeders’ Society.
“It was a legacy auction. That’s why we called it the Last Dance,” Crafford says. According to him, they expected Cremora, undoubtedly the crème de la crème of the auction, to achieve an impressive price and featured her prominently in their marketing materials.
They are still waiting for her to calve, after which she and her calf will go to their new owners, Green Valley Crops, in Bethlehem. Eight registered bulls, 19 registered cows, and 56 registered heifers came under the hammer. The average price for pregnant cows was R134 555, for bulls R65 000, for cows with a calf R38 000, for pregnant cows with a calf R87 500, for pregnant heifers R65 727, and for heifers R42 142.
All animals were sold. BKB Humansdorp held the auction on 12 October at the Swellendam showgrounds. Johan van der Nest was the auctioneer.
