The transport of livestock by road is common around the world, including South Africa. It is increasingly under the eye and demands of authorities and consumers alike to ensure that animals are rightfully transported in conditions that minimise stress and maximise their overall welfare. For farmers and livestock transporters this should not only be a matter of morals and ethics, but also of financial considerations. Animals that are transported well are less likely to become stressed, sick, injured or to lose condition during and after the journey. Whether they are destined for the farm or the abattoir, comfortable animals will not lose the farmer money. At Germany’s EuroTier livestock production exhibition held in November, Carmelo Phillipson of Pezzaioli in Italy told African Farming about his company’s amazingly versatile and capable livestock transport trailers.
