As we approach the end of the year, it’s important to reflect on the good and the bad we faced in 2024. This year has been one of the toughest for the industry and many individuals. The sector encountered various difficulties, including drought conditions influenced by El Niño, increased geopolitical tensions, inadequate road infrastructure, persistent animal diseases and inefficiencies in ports and rail networks. These factors have led to a significant decline in confidence among agribusinesses, resulting in widespread pessimism throughout the industry.
Despite the challenges we’ve faced this year, there are a few notable positives to highlight. One significant improvement is the stabilisation of electricity supply, which is crucial for industries, such as irrigation farming, packhouses and processing. Personally, I believe the appointment of the new minister of agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has been a positive development. He has brought a fresh perspective and energy that has resonated well with all stakeholders. While there are other positives to mention, they do not significantly overshadow the existing challenges.
In this month’s letter, I want to pay special tribute to the farmers who nourish us and care for our land. The agricultural sector is one of the largest contributors to South Africa’s GDP, making it essential for the sustainability of our economy, society and environment. Additionally, it plays a significant role in uplifting rural communities across the country. Therefore, it is concerning that the current state of the sector is not as promising as we would hope. Agricultural stakeholders have a crucial role to play in preventing a decline in the agricultural sector’s performance.
This is why the upcoming holiday season is important for all role players and stakeholders. Christmas, whether you celebrate it or not, provides an opportunity to reflect on the past year, reconnect with loved ones and recharge for the future. It is equally important to reach out to those who may be experiencing hardship during this time, often going unnoticed. In the true African spirit of ubuntu, I encourage you to keep an eye out for opportunities to lend a hand and serve your community in any small way you can.
To all our readers, partners and sponsors, thank you for your support in 2024. Wishing you a restful and enjoyable Christmas, a very happy New Year, and a bright and prosperous 2025.
