Following the success of last year’s inaugural Hurwitz & Hotspot Collaboration Auction, the two leading breeders of Boran cattle held another exciting auction this past weekend at the Hurwitz Farming Bullring auction house in Davel, Mpumalanga.
One of the highlights of the evening was Dorothy (BH 21 114), along with her heifer calf (BH 24 269), which attracted significant attention and became the highest-priced lot at the auction, selling for an impressive R700 000 to Anglo Cattle Ranches. Dorothy is currently in calf to Cyclone, who made headlines in 2024 after selling for a record R8 million.
On the bull side, Zastron (BH 20 349) was the highest-selling bull, fetching R350 000.
The breeders, Hurwitz and Hotspot, expressed their gratitude and happiness to all the buyers and supporters who contributed to the auction’s overwhelming success.
According to Simeon Hurwitz of Hurwitz Farming, both families have put in a tremendous effort to make their initiative successful. He mentioned that they are now in the second year of the project, which has proven to be a great idea so far. The auction featured 34 lots, including only four bulls, whereas the remainder consisted of females, most of which were three-in-ones. “With all the animals that went through the auction, many were in calf or three-in-ones, demonstrating the exceptional fertility rate of the Borans,” Simeon said.
Stompie Olivier, owner of Hotspot Cattle in Ventersdorp, North West, expressed his satisfaction with the auction. He wished all the buyers the best with their new animals and expressed the hope that the genetics they acquired will positively impact their herds. He said it was a privilege for Hotspot Cattle to hold this auction, and that it has been a tremendous success since they launched it last year.
