The renowned Merino breeding stock of Andrew Jordaan and his three sons from Spekboomberg near Cradock has attracted widespread interest from Lesotho.
The wool breeders group Matlakeng from Maseru bagged the most expensive ram at the production auction on 6 February. The ram, 1559-232647, was sold for R70 000. A total of five buyers from Lesotho registered for the auction and Matlakeng purchased 21 rams.
Another buyer who purchased ten rams for the Tweeriviere Trust is Dirk Lötter from Willowmore. The Lötters are known, among other things, for their Boerbok stud.
The Jordaan farm was honoured as Voermol’s Sheep Farmer of the Year in 2019 for the level of precision with which the sheep farming is carried out.
Andrew and his sons, Andrew jr., Wilhelm and Ginkel, farm together on Spekboomberg. Andrew jr. manages the sheep department, Ginkel the dairy and Wilhelm the crops, irrigation and the maintenance of the implements.
The 79 Merino rams achieved an average price of R9 196, 22 Dormer rams were sold at R6 522 each and five Suffolk rams for an average of R6 000.
The auction was presented by Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth. The auctioneer was Jakkie Nel.
