By Johan Norval

Gert Malherbe and his daughter-in-law, Leslé, prominent Suffolk breeders from the Gersuré stud, Hertzogville, acquired top breeding stock at the Vredesig and Friends auction on 7 February at the Be Human complex north of Bloemfontein.

They paid the highest price for a ram and an ewe from Johnny Forbes of Vredesig Dormers at Darling in the Western Cape.

Ram 375 230058 has good figures and is a full brother of the junior champion ram lamb at the 2024 Royal Show and the reserve champion ram lamb at the 2024 Bloem Show. He fetched R35 000.

The most expensive Suffolk at the auction, 363 220079, is the daughter of the breed champion ram at the 2023 and 2024 Royal Show. She cost the Malherbe’s R42 500. The sire of her ram lamb (375 24 291) is Blokman.

The guest sellers were the Malherbes and Linette Goosen from the GSS stud at Hertzogville. The 18 rams averaged R11 600, stud ewes R9 600, stud ewes with a lamb R16 950, and the average price of 80 semen straws was R225.

Commercial ewes averaged R6 666.67, and ewes with lambs R7 000. All the animals were sold.

BKB Kroonstad presented the auction and Jan Mostert was the auctioneer.
