African Farming was at the South African endurance shearing champion Tienie du Plessis’ Shear Madness 2025 event at Gariepdam this weekend. He set a new South African shearing record by shearing 12 two-hour shifts for a total of 1 031 Merino sheep shorn over 24 hours.
At the same time a speed shearing competition was held on the big shearing platform. A number of South Africa’s best shearers took part in this competition, which also featured two shearers from Australia.
Vida Booysen chatted to one of the competitors, France Xhasa from Skaapskêr Skeerdiens. Michael Scott translated between English and isiXhosa.
