A South African record price for a Dexter bull was achieved on 15 February at the 17th annual auction of the Overvaal Dexter Club, held at the Fire & Wine Auction Centre in Pretoria. A cow also set a new record price.
The bull JCAL 21-18 Brisket, from the Davis Dexters stud of Gert Davis of Delmas, fetched R120 000. The buyer was John Muller of JCAL Dexters, Middelburg (Mpumalanga).
Davis told African Farming that he had previously bought the bull as a calf with its mother from Muller. He raised him and used him in his herd, after which Muller bought him back at the auction.
Mini-Moo Sonja FH 21-0008 fetched R45 000, the highest price for a pregnant cow. This is also a national record. Frank Hinze of Mini-Moo Dexters at Howick in KwaZulu-Natal sold her to Corrie Rossouw of Roscor Dexters, Belfast. This cow was the senior and grand champion cow in the club championship on the same occasion.
Bulls averaged R56 500, pregnant cows with calves (3-in-1) R20 667, cows with calves R15 000, pregnant cows R18 955, pregnant heifers R20 167 and open heifers averaged R14 222.
The auction was held by BKB. Billy Lyons was the auctioneer.
