The 36th production auction of the Kalahari Karoo Meatmaster Group, held on 22 February at the Rubicon Auction Centre in Koster, North West, did not boast extraordinarily prices, but the offer of 25 rams and 78 ewes achieved relatively high average prices.
Roe du Plessis of Elandsnek, Strydenburg, who is, together with his father, Jean, one of the members, says that both sellers and buyers can be satisfied with the prices. The other members of the sellers’ group are Riaan Liebenberg (Hanri Trust, Upington) and Chris Potgieter (Klaargoud, Upington).
The group holds four auctions annually. In addition to the one at Koster, two are held in Upington and one in Bloemfontein.
The most expensive ram was GR 245 of Elandsnek, which was sold for R32 000 to Danie van der Watt of the Mulati stud from Stoffberg in Mpumalanga.
The most expensive ewe, CRL 21.725 and her ewe lamb CRL 24.441, fetched R28 000. Liebenberg was the seller and the buyer was Mario Marais of Model Meatmasters, Kleinfontein, Brits.
The average price of the rams was R12 600, that of three-in-one ewes R9 800, ewes with lambs R8 873, pregnant ewes R4 648 and non-pregnant ewes R3 809. All the animals offered at the sale were sold.
The auction was hosted by Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth with Hennie Goosen as auctioneer.
