Limpopo’s first agricultural show, known as Limpopo AgriXpo, was a resounding success, says Kobus de Lange, one of the farmers behind the initiative to establish an agricultural showcase in the province.
Held from 13 to 15 March at The Ranch Resort between Polokwane and Mokopane, the show attracted thousands of visitors over the three days. De Lange says every exhibitor has already committed to returning next year.
“For us, this is the strongest confirmation that we made the right decision in taking on this challenge,” he said after the event.
The AgriXpo organisers successfully showcased Limpopo’s diverse agricultural landscape, engaging both different farming sectors and population groups, he says. Students from the province’s high schools, agricultural colleges and the University of Limpopo attended daily lectures on livestock and veld management.
Willie O’Brien of Wensim Simmentalers in Mokopane captivated aspiring young farmers with his presentations on animal health and artificial insemination.
Dr Dario Cremona emphasised the importance of dipping and vaccinating in livestock management, and Dr Johan Cloete demonstrated techniques to minimise stress in cattle during handling.
Peter Mockford of Mockford Farms led a daily practical demonstration on his selection criteria for his Bonsmara herd. His sessions drew not only students but also farmers of all ages, eager to listen and learn.
“We are globally recognised for producing top-quality citrus, avocados and macadamia nuts. Now, we finally have our own agricultural show,” said Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba in her speech at the opening of the show.
“At last year’s Agri Limpopo Congress, where the MEC and I were guests, some of the organisers committed to making this AgriXpo a reality – and they delivered! Congratulations!
“We are already looking forward to next year, knowing it will be even better.”
