The eighth production auction of Ankoles and Borans from president Cyril Ramaphosa’s Ntaba Nyoni stud at Phala Phala outside Bela-Bela generated a total turnover of R13,5 million over the weekend.
JP Smith, chief operating officer of Veewinkel, which hosted the auction, says there were a total of 65 lots and the average price of R187 500 per lot is clear evidence of a healthy auction.
“Thanks to the quality of Ntaba Nyoni’s offering, which has improved year on year, and also because of their support of the Boran and Ankole industries, there was great interest in the auction, and it was very well supported.”
The auction consisted of 25 Ankole lots, for which buyers paid an average of R280 000 per lot, totaling R7 million. Then there were also 40 Boran lots, which achieved an average of R162 500 per lot, totaling R6,5 million.
Among the outstanding prices was R550 000 paid by the Lasarus Game Farm at Albertinia in the Western Cape for an Ankole cow, NANK20-007 and her calf NANK20-027, ICT 52” Cumulus 3-in-1 (lot 4).
Nico Lerm of Lasarus and Walter Kinnear of Rustenburg also paid R550 00 for a bull calf, NANK24-058, which is described as the first New Genetic bull calf at auction.
Among the Borans, Caroline (BH170424), a B07-83 daughter with a bull calf (NBOR24-134) by Jester, fetched R650 000 (lot 6). The buyer was Nowaal Mdluli from Mpumalanga. Lot 4, another cow and calf, Zara (FN 180092) and (BH18-490), were also bought for R550 000 by Liz Reilly.
Simeon Hurwitz of Hurwitz Farming at Davel in Mpumalanga also paid R550 000 for Embo (SZ 181705) and SZ25-3307, a Mkhulu daughter with a bull calf (lot 34).
With regards to the Ankoles, the average prices for bulls were R331 000, R320 000 for cows, R450 000 for cows with calves, and R38 666 average for semen. Boran bulls fetched an average of R106 000, cows with calves R223 636, three-in-one cows R303 333 and heifers R50 000.
According to Smith, there were a total of 200 registrations on the online platform and on the floor. About 250 guests attended the event.
