“Diversifying is very important in farming.” These are the words of Nkosana Mtambo from Mtambo Boerdery. He was speaking at the African Farming Production and Financial Matters Workshop taking place at the Phumelela Vrede Farm in the Free State today.
“In farming you don’t put all your eggs in one basket because if that basket falls, then you’re in trouble. One income stream is not enough in this business.” He also advised the farmers to not just make farming fashionable but to ensure it becomes profitable too.
He touched on the importance of farmers working together, saying if you walk alone, you’ll walk faster but not very far. He said Phumelela Agri was born out of cooperation by the farmers from the same area. “We decided to come together and farm as one commodity. It enabled us to start buying inputs in bulk and saved us a lot of money as well. But he advised that when you form a corporation, you should get people who are passionate about farming and not just pick someone “who was just chilling by the corner”.
