Merino rams with high-quality fine and superfine wool offered on the 21st production sale of the P’Drino Merino stud attracted buyers from as far as the Western Cape.
BKB hosted the auction on 25 February on behalf of PD Jacobs and his son-in-law, Marius Joubert, on their farm Vlakfontein in the Trompsburg district.
JP Marais was the auctioneer at the auction, which featured a very good and even string of rams. The excellent breeding stock attracted great interest and contributed to the successful auction.
This Jacobs family farm has been in operation for six generations and is currently run under the experienced leadership of PD. His passion for Merino breeding and his in-depth knowledge are now being passed on to the next generation, and his son-in-law, Marius Joubert, is actively involved in the management of the farm.
PD took over the stud, which has existed since 1962, in 1976. Under his leadership it has grown into a strong, economical enterprise. Since 1985, he has followed a strict breeding policy based on a fine balance between meat production of the highest quality and market-oriented high-quality fine wool, fertility, reproduction and adaptability in order to breed the most economical Merino. Technological advances such as BLUP breeding values, DSS and genomic testing play a key role in this process.
The most expensive ram (lot 10) was bought by Langzeekoegat Farm near Trompsburg for R30 000. Rams achieved an average price of R9 000 and old ewes R1 310. Wether lambs were sold for an average of R42,36/kg and ewe lambs for R40,25/kg.
