The annual Wauldby-Dohne Merino auction was held on 12 March on the farm Wauldby in the Kei Road district of the Eastern Cape. The stud is owned by Robert Blaine, a third-generation Dohne breeder.
Deemie Blaine founded the stud in 1947, which is well known for the animals’ resistance to hairworm. The stud made history in 2015 when it sold the first rams with an EBV index for hairworm resistance.
A total of 42 rams were sold without reserve at an average price of R9 166. Goegie and Christoffel Botha, a father and son from the farm Hartebeeslaagte near Pearston, bought the most expensive ram for R17 000.
Two- to four-tooth ewes sold for an average of R1 710, 6- to 8-tooth ewes for R1 880 and full-mouth ewes for an average of R1 696. Most of the 150 ewes offered were sold through negotiations after the auction.
BKB Cradock hosted the auction. The auctioneer was Jeremy Pearson.
