A pregnant Bonsmara cow was sold for R300 000 at the national Bonsmara female auction held on 19 March at the Afridome in Parys. Only cows and heifers were offered.
The 3-in-1 cow AG 21-0406 was sold with her bull calf, AG 24-0301, by the Arcadia Bonsmara stud of Arthur de Villiers and Seun of Vrede to the Genetic Link group.
Arthur’s grandfather, Arthur Edward de Villiers, started farming Afrikaner cattle in the Bushveld in 1937. In 1958, his son, Arthur Greyling de Villiers, joined his father and started farming Bonsmaras. His son, Arthur junior, the current owner of the stud, started farming with his father in 1985. He will hold his next production auction on the farm on 9 April.
The second highest price was R270 000 for a 3-in-1 cow, LAR 21-0235, from Up George Bonsmaras of Derick and Tutu Ralfe of Wasbank. The buyer was the 334 Bonsmara stud of Chris van der Merwe at Fort Nottingham. Up George also sold LAR 22-0373, a pregnant heifer, for R200 000 to Shefa Bonsmaras at Brandfort.
Six other females were sold for R150 000 or more. They are:
• SYF 21-0032, a cow with a calf from Syferfontein Boerdery at Vrede, for R240 000 to Genetic Link. Syferfontein also sold SYF 22-0264, a pregnant heifer, for R150 000 to Genetic Link.
• NFS 21-0237, a cow with a calf from Nick Serfontein, Sernick Bonsmaras, Edenville, for R190 000 to Tumelo Seqhobane of Thamphoreya Bonsmaras at Vrede.
• RPE 22-0064, a pregnant heifer from Essakov Bonsmaras, Klerksdorp, for R170 000 to Heico Stroh of Dietmar Bonsmaras, Bultfontein.
• BF 20-0136, a pregnant cow from Buckridge Bonsmaras, Vryburg, for R150 000 to Nick van Deventer of Suikerbos Bonsmaras, Vryburg.
• SBJ 22-0207, a pregnant heifer from Sebadja Bonsmaras, Marble Hall, for R150 000 to Jaco de Wet of Ini-Bos Bonsmaras, Marble Hall.
The auction was part of Bonsmara SA’s annual Red Breed Event, which was attended by approximately 400 people. All the animals on offer were sold. The auction was presented by Vleissentraal Bloemfontein. The auctioneer was Mike Killassy and the marketer was Janus Oberholzer.
The 55 animals sold, according to Ian Grobbelaar of Vleissentraal, achieved an average of R91 091. A total of fourteen 3-in-1 cows achieved an average of R134 643, 7 cows with calves achieved an average of R65 000 and 34 pregnant heifers were sold for an average of R68 529.
