It was an evening of spectacular outfits and spectacular prices when breeding material from the cream of South Africa’s meat goat breeders went under the hammer on 16 April at the annual Black Tie Blue Blood production auction at De Eike, Rawsonville. No fewer than three record prices were achieved.
A three-year-old grand champion Savannah ram (95220002) from Andrew Roberts and Ju-Mari Pretorius’ Maize Valley stud at Hoopstad caused a stir. The R340 000 paid for him is a SA record price for this breed. The buyer is Anton Barnard and sons of Thabazimbi, who also paid R85 000 for a Maize Valley Savannah ewe (95230108), a SA record price for a Savanna ewe. Roberts set the previous record prices in 2023 when he paid R55 000 for a ram and R60 000 for a ewe from Koenie Kotzé of Douglas.

Another Savanna ram (95230089) from Maize Valley fetched R180 000. The buyer was Steven Strydom from the BGP stud at Polokwane. A Boer goat ewe (2049220006) from Maize Valley was sold for R90 000 to Christiaan and Cecile Labuschagne (Akuna Matata stud) at Hoopstad.
The most expensive Boer goat ewe, 776200417, from the Nico Botha stud of Casper Beyleveld of Bristown, fetched R320 000, a South African auction record price for a Boer goat ewe. The buyer was William Smit from VEA Stud Breeders. This price breaks the previous Black Tie record of R260 000 for an ewe by Salmon van Huyssteen of Hartebeespoort, also paid by Smit.

Lukas Burger and his son Abraham of Griekwastad clearly made their mark on the breeding stock on offer at the auction. Several of the top animals come from the Burger bloodlines. The second most expensive Boer goat ewe (762230905) is a daughter of the most expensive ram ever sold in South Africa, Formula 1 (R1 000 050 in 2024). Tokkie Ferreira of Vryburg paid R210 000 for her. Ferreira also acquired the third most expensive Formula 1 daughter from the Burgers for R155 000. The fourth most expensive Boer goat ewe from the Burgers was sold to VEA Stud Breeders for R130 000.

The Burgers’ most expensive Boer goat ram, Klokkies (76223108), is a son of Bell. He was sold for R100 000 to Johan Enslin from the Western Cape. Twenty straws each from the Burger rams Lexus and Made in Heaven were sold at R4 700 each or a total of R188 000.
The average prices of the 11 Boer goat rams were R38 626, four Boer goat flock rams R34 750, 45 Boer goat ewes R46 577 and 9 Boer goat flock ewes R32 666. Four Boer goat ewes with lambs achieved an average of R21 250 and a flock ewe with lamb R47 000.
The average prices of the Savananas: 1 ram at R180 000, 1 flock ram at R340 000, 3 ewes at R23 333 and 5 flock ewes at R46 400.
The auction was presented by Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth in collaboration with SwiftVee, with Danie Straus as the auctioneer.
