Bufland Bonsmaras and guest sellers’ fifth production auction, held on 2 April on the farm Buffelsfontein in Mookgophong, Limpopo, saw 100% sales and exceeding expectations, according to HP van der Walt, marketer at Vleissentraal Bosveld, who hosted the auction.
All 11 SP bulls, some of which underwent phase D testing and others phase C testing, were sold for an average of R64 091.
The bull ZBR 210025 from Leonosa Bonsmaras at Mookgophong fetched the highest price. He was sold for R110 000 to Rudolph and Trudie van der Veen of Venture Beef & Livestock, Lyttleton.
According to Van der Walt, this is a particularly nice bull with good breeding figures. He fits well into Venture Beef & Livestock’s herd. “They were looking for that type of bull,” says Van der Walt.
As for the female animals, the average price was R18 370 for 27 cows with calves, R17 500 for 15 pregnant cows with calves, R17 303 for 19 pregnant cows, R17 706 for 23 pregnant heifers and R13 219 for 40 open heifers.
The production auction exceeded expectations, according to Van der Walt. “It went better than we thought. In these difficult times in the cattle industry, we are pleased that all the animals were sold and achieved good prices.”
According to him there were new buyers who came from afar. “Usually the animals are sold to farmers in the area. We now have cattle that will go as far as Thabazimbi.”
The presenters of the auction were Lukas Eksteen (Bufland Bonsmaras, Mookgophong), Elbert de Kock (Nylsvley Bonsmaras, Modimolle), Rudolph and Trudie van der Veen (Venture Beef, Mookgophong), Gideon de Villiers (Leonosa Bonsmaras, Mookgophong) and Gideon van der Walt (Platdoorns Bonsmaras, Mookgophong).
Mike Killassy was the auctioneer.
