Agriculture in Africa has always been more than merely putting seed in the soil; it’s a calling to feed families, preserve nature, and uplift entire communities. Today, the power of agriculture is being reimagined through the lens of leadership, innovation and inclusion, especially by women and youth who are emerging as the true champions of change.
One platform that recognises and celebrates this impact is the Standard Bank Top Women Awards. As entries open for the upcoming edition, the focus has never been clearer: the future of Africa’s agriculture lies in the hands of those closest to the land.
Launched over two decades ago, the Standard Bank Top Women Awards have evolved into one of South Africa’s most prestigious recognitions of women’s leadership across various industries. Agriculture has rightly claimed its well-deserved spot on the main stage in recent years.

Nurturers, innovators, custodians
Across the continent, women have long protected and cultivated natural resources. Inspired by pioneers like Kenya’s Wangari Maathai, women continue to create new life where others see only challenges, planting trees, converting waste into clean energy, and leading community-based solutions in rural farming.
Yet, many of these incredible women continue to face barriers such as limited access to land, credit, and decision-making spaces. That’s why platforms like the Top Women Awards are important. They shine a light where it’s most needed and help open the doors to recognition, influence, and investment.

Growing change
Africa’s youth are no longer waiting for opportunities; they’re creating them. Young farmers are entering a new era with the rise of digital agriculture, precision tools, climate-smart practices, and data-driven planting methods.
Smallholder farmers, particularly youth-led and women-led enterprises, are key to food security and job creation. In 2023, Standard Bank committed R40 million to support women in agriculture, demonstrating that financial institutions are beginning to prioritise inclusion and empowerment.
How to keep growing
Transformation doesn’t happen by chance; it must be nurtured. Here’s what we must do as a continent:
- Ensure open access to training and microfinance, particularly in rural areas.
- Build stronger value chains to help agri-SMMEs thrive.
- Combine tradition with innovation, from seed-saving practices to smart irrigation tools.
- Create cooperatives that harness collective power to drive scale and impact.
- Ensure representation to provide women and youth with a seat at the table – where real agricultural decisions are made.
These principles are echoed in bold, pan-African programmes like the Creative Opportunities for Youth and Women in Africa, aiming to raise $100 million to uplift 10 million entrepreneurs. Such investments plant the roots for generational wealth and sustainability.
