Record price for Droughtmaster cow at Considerata SA’s production auction

By Jan-Hendrik de Villiers

Considerata SA’s ninth production auction was a resounding success, with one of the 3-in-1 Droughtmaster cows sold for R1,5 million. This is a record price for a female Droughtmaster.

Werner Boshoff of R13 Droughtmasters at Ellisras bought this cow.

According to Elrize Alberts of Elrize Alberts Marketing, the cow achieved this high price because she is a 3-in-1 (pregnant cow with a calf) and has the top breeding material in the country.

“She comes from one of the most sought-after maternal bloodlines in the Droughtmaster breed, and her genetic impact is already visible in the stud,” Alberts said. “Her son, CSA 21-104, currently serves as one of the stud sires in the Considerata SA herd.”

According to Boshoff, he had his eye on her from the start and he considers it sensible to fork out this kind of money for a cow when you consider the animal’s progeny. He selects specific animals to build his herd with and this cow is everything he was looking for.

Considerata SA also holds the record for the most expensive Droughtmaster bull, which was sold at its production auction last year for R1,6 million.

The buyers were Ro’an van Tonder and his father, Nico, from Soetvelde Droughtmasters in the North West.

The most expensive bull at the auction, C22-78 (lot 6), was sold for R1,1 million to Deo Gratias Droughtmasters from Wolmaransstad.

A total of 22 pregnant SP cows with calves were auctioned for an average price of R213 900, while two SP heifers sold for an average of R480 000. Four SP bulls also achieved an average of R600 000.

According to Alberts, they are pleased with how the auction went and she says it was well supported by emerging as well as established Droughtmaster breeders, which is proof of the breed’s growing popularity.

“We got excellent prices. The buyers are also very pleased with the quality they were able to get for the prices they paid.

Johan Dannhauser of Considerata SA is also extremely pleased with the auction.

“You always have to be satisfied with your auction results, especially in the current economic climate. We are of course very happy that the weaner calf price and the entire meat industry are currently on an upward curve.”

According to him, the auction also performed better than last year’s auction.

Elrize Alberts Bemarking presented the auction in collaboration with Simon Hughes Marketing. Meerkat handled the online sales. The auctioneer was Johan van der Nest.
