The Limpopo Department of Agriculture has described the Ramahwidi Agricultural Cooperative as standout model of women’s empowerment in agriculture, which has captured the attention of Limpopo’s MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nakedi Kekana.
Located just outside Polokwane, the women-led cooperative is flourishing under the dedicated leadership of Sewela Thosago.
The MEC embarked on a visit to the site recently and was impressed with what she saw.
Embracing innovative, climate-smart vegetable production techniques, the cooperative makes use of both shade nets and open-field farming. The department said their impressive yield includes a variety of crops – from Swiss chard to cocktail tomatoes – reflecting their resilience, commitment and hard work.
MEC Kekana’s visit underscores the department’s ongoing commitment to supporting and uplifting women in agriculture. “But her involvement went beyond recognition; she engaged directly with the cooperative members, listening to their challenges to ensure future support is practical and responsive to their needs.”
The department said the visit is particularly timely in the lead-up to the G20 Meeting on Agriculture, where Limpopo’s agricultural capabilities will be proudly showcased on a global stage.
“As part of its continued support, the department has announced the construction of a pack-house with ablution facilities in the upcoming 2025/26 financial year. This initiative will help the cooperative meet the South African Good Agricultural Practices (SA GAP) compliance requirements, boosting both productivity and market access.”
The department said it continues to drive growth, development and inclusivity in the province – empowering communities and paving the way for a more sustainable agricultural future.
