AgriSA CEO Johann Kotzé delivered a powerful message about the critical role of agriculture in South Africa’s economy and in food security at a recent agricultural stakeholder dinner forum hosted by the executive mayor of the City of Tshwane, Dr Nasiphi Moya. The event brought together key players in the agricultural sector with the aim of fostering collaboration and strengthening partnerships to support sustainable agricultural growth.
Addressing an audience of government leaders, farmers, agribusiness representatives and community stakeholders, Kotzé outlined why agriculture must remain a national priority for the next 25 years and beyond.
“First and foremost, people need to eat, and that need is constant,” he said. “Our sector contributes about 3% to GDP, but its true value lies in the stability and nourishment it provides for our nation.”
Kotzé also highlighted the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation, noting that more than 55% of South Africans currently live in cities – a figure expected to rise to 80% in the coming decades. “Urban populations will increasingly rely on organised agriculture to deliver safe, affordable food,” he said. “We must be prepared to meet that demand.”
Turning to climate change and sustainability, Kotzé stressed the need for future-focused leadership and innovative farming practices. “South Africa is blessed with land, water and skilled farmers, but we must adapt to shifting climates and make decisions based on long-term vision. Too many citizens still go to bed hungry – and this is a call to action for us all.”
He concluded by emphasising agriculture’s unifying power. “Agriculture connects rural and urban, local and global. It is a job that will always be needed, because people will always need to eat.”
