The solid demand for Meatmaster sheep was clearly evident from the relatively high prices at the production auction of Jean du Plessis’s Elandsnek Meatmasters.
A grandfather who helps his grandson building his herd, paid the highest price of R95 000 for a ram. In addition to this ram, Schalk van Oudtshoorn van Jacobsdal paid R85 000, R60 000 and R58 000 for three other expensive rams. This is the third time that grandfather Schalk has purchased Meatmasters for 20-year-old Nicolaas (Tjoppas).
He bought a total of 68 females and six rams at the Elandsnek auction. In addition to Tjoppas’ herd of 300, his grandfather’s contribution so far is 140 females and 18 rams.
The average price of the 69 rams at the auction was R20 413.04, the herd rams R7 050, pregnant ewes R7 646,50, possibly pregnant ewes R4 462,50 and ewes with lambs R7 400.
Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth hosted the auction on 12 June in collaboration with SwiftVee at the Hopetown showground. Hennie Goosen was the auctioneer.
