Growing interest in the Braford cattle breed boosted prices at the eleventh national auction of the SA Braford Cattle Breeders Society on 14 June in Parys, generating a turnover of more than R3,2 million.
Johan de Jager, the society’s chairman, says he is experiencing an increasing interest in the breed and the quality of the selected animals has meant that the average price of the bulls has increased from R77 000 in 2024 to R100 555. The females were also more expensive than last year.
A bull from Carl Thiele’s Thiele Holdings from the farm Schikhoek near Paulpietersburg in KwaZulu-Natal was the most expensive of the nine bulls at the auction at R185 000.
Pregnant heifers fetched an average price of R25 435, three-in-one cows R35 000 and a cow with a calf cost R37 500. Vleissentraal Ermelo hosted the auction at the Parys Afridome with PM Swart as auctioneer.
