Nonceba Kontsiwe, the Eastern Cape’s MEC for Agriculture, and Simpiwe Somdyala, the CEO of Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency, alongside local farmers and leaders in agribusiness, celebrated Harvest Day, hosted by the Matabele Grain Farmers Association in collaboration with producers from the Alfred Nzo District.
The Harvest Day celebrations, held under the inspiring theme, “Reaping the Fruits of Our Land and Unity,” took place at the Rhadebe Family Farm near Matatiele, where over 100 hectares have produced approximately 700 tonnes of grain with a projected revenue exceeding R2 million.

Record-Breaking Yields Showcase Regional Potential
MEC Kontsiwe’s visit highlighted the success story of Try Again Farm in Ongeluksnek, Matatiele, which has achieved remarkable yields of 10.5 to 12 tonnes of grain per hectare across 100 hectares. The MEC praised the farmers’ hard work and dedication, describing the achievement as “a model for sustainable agriculture and a testament to the potential of collective action in driving growth and improving food security in the province.”
The event showcased the power of unity that has become central to this region. The success being celebrated is attributed to collaborative farming efforts amongst local grain farmers, demonstrating how collective action can drive both individual farm success and broader regional food security initiatives. This approach has proven particularly effective in a sector where shared knowledge, resources and market access can make the difference between subsistence and prosperity.

Strategic Planning for Agricultural Growth
The Harvest Day festivities were complemented by strategic discussions aimed at strengthening the agricultural value chain. The department said a stakeholder engagement session held at the Matatiele Fresh Produce Market brought together government officials, agribusiness leaders and farmer representatives to explore strategies for improving rural infrastructure and unlocking new market opportunities for emerging and smallholder farmers.
Somdyala participated as a key panellist during these strategic discussions, which focused on unpacking comprehensive approaches to agricultural development. The sessions addressed critical areas, including value chain strengthening, infrastructure development and the creation of sustainable market pathways for farmers at various stages of their journey.
