Tough economic conditions and poor cash flow in the beef cattle industry have a limiting effect on production auctions.
By Johan Norval
Gerrit van Zyl, Voermol’s beef cattle farmer of 2010, says cattle farmers should seriously consider switching to regenerative agriculture practices to reduce the overhead costs of their grazing.
Nevertheless, Van Zyl’s Hanzyl production auction, held on 23 July 2025 on the farm Struisfontein near Dewetsdorp, yielded good prices. The most expensive bull, GZV 220177, was sold for R130 000 to Willie Anderson of Mampudi Bonsmaras, Marquard.
A total of 28 bulls achieved an average price of R61 400, 3-in-1 cows averaged R18 000, cows with calves R17 000, 33 pregnant cows R16 921 and 40 pregnant heifers R17 370.
Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth hosted the auction, with André van Zyl as auctioneer.
