Standard Bank, in strategic partnership with the University of the Free State (UFS) and the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, spearheaded a transformation programme that has reshaped the agricultural landscape in South Africa. With a clear focus on practical outcomes and long-term impact, the initiative supported black commercial farmers in the Free State by providing access to essential resources, technical expertise and developmental finance.
Leveraging the combined strengths of academia, government and the financial sector, the programme created a robust support system that enabled farmers to build formal, future-ready agribusinesses capable of thriving in a competitive and evolving sector. To date, more than 160 black farmers have benefited from the initiative – gaining the skills, networks and tools needed to scale their operations, improve productivity and contribute meaningfully to local economies and food security.
This collaborative model reflects Standard Bank’s broader commitment to driving inclusive economic growth and fostering sustainable development through partnerships that deliver measurable value on the ground. It is not only an investment in agriculture but in people, livelihoods and the long-term prosperity of South Africa’s rural communities by providing financial support, innovative agricultural solutions and education aimed at boosting productivity and resilience in the farming community.
