Farmers across KwaZulu-Natal have a golden opportunity to boost their farming operations as the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) opens applications for its comprehensive Multi-planting Season Programme.

The initiative, spearheaded by MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, represents a significant investment in the province’s agricultural sector, offering both mechanisation services and production inputs to qualifying farmers.
Two-pronged Support Approach
The programme offers farmers flexibility through two distinct support options, ensuring that diverse farming operations can benefit according to their specific needs.
Option 1: Mechanisation Support
Farmers opting for mechanisation assistance will receive comprehensive field services including ploughing, discing, planting and chemical applications. However, participants must come prepared with their own inputs – fertiliser, chemicals and seeds. This option specifically targets grain production, though other enterprises will receive cultivation support.
The mechanisation programme accommodates individual farmers working between 0.5ha and 5ha, provided the land forms a single block. For cooperatives or group farming initiatives, support is allocated based on participant numbers, with each member eligible for a maximum of 5ha.
Option 2: Production Inputs
The production input option provides farmers with essential materials including fertiliser, grain seeds (maize and beans), potato seeds and vegetable seedlings. This comprehensive package aims to reduce the financial burden on farmers while ensuring quality inputs.
Farmers selecting the full package of grain seed, fertiliser, herbicides and pesticides are limited to 2ha per beneficiary in a single block. However, those choosing individual items such as 3:2:3 +zinc fertiliser, seeds or chemicals can access support for up to 5ha.
The programme places special emphasis on household food security through its “one home one garden” initiative, supporting vegetable seedling distribution for both household and institutional gardens.
Qualifying For Support
The Department has established clear criteria to ensure support reaches genuine farmers committed to agricultural development. Applicants must be South African citizens residing in KwaZulu-Natal and aged 18 years or older, with provisions for child-headed households under food security initiatives.
Land access remains crucial, with participants required to demonstrate access through Permission to Occupy (PTO), lease agreements or title deeds. The Department emphasises that farmers must clear their land of obstructive elements to facilitate machinery access.
Importantly, applicants cannot benefit from other departmental support programmes during the same financial year, ensuring fair distribution of resources across the farming community.
Application Process
The application process has been streamlined for farmer convenience. Interested participants must visit their nearest local agricultural office to collect application forms and submit completed documentation to the same office. This approach ensures direct interaction between farmers and agricultural extension officers, facilitating better programme implementation.
For household food security initiatives, beneficiaries will be profiled by extension officers working alongside ward committees, eliminating the need for separate applications.
Programme Timeline And Outlook
Applications close on 29 August 2025 at 16:00, giving farmers limited time to prepare their submissions. The Department has cautioned that support depends on available financial resources, emphasising the importance of early application.
This initiative aligns with the province’s broader agricultural development strategy, working towards the National Development Plan 2030 goals while addressing immediate farmer needs.
Making Agriculture Fashionable
The programme operates under the inspiring banner “Let’s Make Agriculture Fashionable”, reflecting the Department’s commitment to transforming agricultural perceptions and attracting new participants to the sector.
The Multi-planting Season Programme represents more than financial support – it embodies KwaZulu-Natal’s vision of a thriving agricultural sector that contributes meaningfully to food security and economic development.
Farmers interested in participating are encouraged to contact their local agricultural offices immediately to begin the application process. With comprehensive support available for both mechanisation and production inputs, this programme offers an excellent opportunity for agricultural expansion and improved productivity.
